Capped by a performance in which Junior guard Reyana Colson became 18th on the all-time scoring list for Cal Poly with 1,120 points, the Broncos won their 14th straight game against Cal State University Stanislaus 65-44 Saturday at Kellogg Gym.

The Broncos were red hot coming off wins on Friday, 67-56 against Chico State, and a 68-59 road win against the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes on Feb 2.

At home against the Warriors Saturday night, the Broncos displayed good ball movement and good spacing in their transition offense to extend their winning ways.

Colson in particular, tied a career high with 27 points and was a major contributor in Cal Poly’s overall 42 percent field goal shooting percentage.

The Broncos seemed in control of the contest from the start of the game, as they went on a 19-4 run early. By the time sophomore guard Jennifer Bryant sank the Broncos’ sole 3-pointer of the game, Cal Poly led 35-12 with 3:15 left in the first half en route to a 39-16 halftime advantage.

Another strong performance came from senior guard Stephisha Walton. Walton battled through a nagging injury to post her fifth double-double against CSU East Bay last weekend and came back strong this week to register her sixth of the season and 11th of her career, contributing 16 points and 10 boards in 29 minutes.

Megan Ford followed Colson and Walton as the third leading scorer for the Broncos with 7 points, while also pitching in with 10 rebounds.

Again and again on multiple trips inside the interior of the CSU Stanislaus defense, the Broncos seemed to find success penetrating with ease.

“I think Reyana controlled the tempo of the game from end line to end line,” said head coach Scott Davis following Saturday’s win, “We got a lot of things in transition early on, they [CSU Stanislaus] are not a zone team. We did not shoot the 3 very well at all, but we still felt pretty good.”

Davis added the Broncos also got a lot of scoring opportunities off their opponent’s turnovers, despite giving up a number of rebounds.

The Warriors did not have a good night from the field, managing only 15 out of 55 shot attempts. Cal Poly’s defensive attack held them to under 30 percent field goal shooting throughout the night.

Free throw shooting didn’t help CSU Stanislaus much either, as they finished 50 percent from the line, sinking 11 out of 22.

“[Stephisha] Walton did a great job for us on the boards and Megan Ford also did a great job for us defensively, she helped us win the battle of the boards,” said Davis
The Broncos were only 1 out of 13 from beyond the arc in their win against the Wildcats and also struggled in that department the previous night in their win against Chico State, though they fared slightly better at 36 percent, sinking 4 out of 11 shots.

With Saturday’s victory, the Broncos are now 16-4 overall and 13-3 in the CCAA,
Up next for Cal Poly is Humboldt State in Arcata on Thursday before winding up their week on the road with a Saturday game at Sonoma State.
