If the first week of the month was any indicator, February looks to be a month of success for Cal Poly athletics.
Between the four teams that played last week, the Broncos had a collective record of 8-3.
Three of the teams, our two basketball teams and the women’s tennis team went an undefeated 7-0, with the only losses coming from the baseball team’s opening week going 1-2.
Those two losses were close ones, with the loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills going into extra innings.
The men’s basketball team in particular is on a real roll, on a win streak that currently sits at seven.
The momentum is reminiscent of last season, when the Broncos charged through the tail end of the season to take top place in the CCAA going into the playoffs.
The Broncos’ most recent win was a historic defensive effort, where they held Cal State Stanislaus to 32 points. Not for a half, but for the entire game.
The defensive effort marks the Broncos’ most dominant shut down in 31 years.
The game reinforced the defensive style of Bronco basketball. In the ten-year Kamansky era the Broncos are 33-1 when they hold their opponent under 50 points.
Its a good month for teams to start their seasons at Cal Poly, which the men’s tennis team does next week.
The track and field teams also start later in the month, adding to an already busy Bronco Athletic schedule.
There are still plenty of big games coming up for Bronco fans to enjoy, including the basketball teams’ final home games Feb. 25 against CSU Monterey Bay and Feb. 26 against San Francisco State.
The baseball team will have a shot at revenge against Cal State Dominguez Hills at home on Feb. 27.
