Junior guard Reyana Colson of the women’s basketball team scored nine points in the Broncos’ win over Humboldt State.
Out of context, this information isn’t anything special.
But in context, this stat is very important. It marks the end of a streak of double-digit scoring games for Colson, which ended at 34.
At first glance, this looks like Colson came a point short of keeping her streak alive, which is true, but the fashion in which she did it shows more about the kind of player she is than any length of streak could have.
With nine points and time winding down, Colson was in the paint with the ball and well within her ability to make the basket.
Instead of putting up the shot though, the Compton native dished the ball to open teammate Nicolette Brown who had a better shot.
“We knew that Reyana was right there, but to show how unselfish she is, she had a drive to the basket and decided that Nicolette [Brown] was uncontested,’’ Davis said. “Her teammates think the world of Reyana and that play showed the type of player and teammate she is.’’
Colson’s leadership qualities on the court are more than intangible.
All season Colson has led the Broncos’ offensive effort with a team-high 16.5 points per game.
Colson’s offensive efforts aren’t limited to scoring, however. She also leads the team in assists with 3.0 assists per game. Defensively, Colson leads the Broncos in steals with 2.0 per game.
Her consistent scoring has included some big nights, including a 23-point performance against Western Oregon Dec. 18.
The Broncos’ successful season so far has come on the shoulders of leaders like Colson, whose energy has lifted her teammates to new heights.
While Colson no longer has her double-digit scoring streak, what she has shown the team by example is worth so much more.
While a high scoring streak can inspire a team to take more shots, ending the streak for an open teammate could bring the team even closer together.
With the season moving into the thick of things, team chemistry can push a squad to new heights and could spell disaster for the rest of the CCAA.
