The Cal Poly Women’s Basketball team earned a spot in the NCAA West Region playoffs over the weekend despite being knocked out of the CCAA Tournament on Friday night at by Chico State 71-56.

The Broncos will face the University of Alaska in Seattle, Wash.

Starting the week off on Tuesday night with a home game in the Kellogg Gym, the Broncos earned a win over Cal State San Bernardino, 46-63.

This team victory stemmed from the Broncos taking advantage of passing skills, and four players bringing in points in double figures.

Senior guard Stephisha Walton scored 14 points, junior guard Reyana Colson scored 12.

Junior forward La’kenya Simon-West and sophomore center Megan Ford both scored 10.

“We got a large lead and never let them get ahead,” said Cal Poly head coach Scott Davis. “They did a great job.”

The Tuesday win for the Broncos transitioned Cal Poly into the CCAA semi-finals on Friday night.

“We just need to stay focused,” said junior Reyana Colson. “We play very well as a team, and we just need to continue that into the weekend.”

Following the Tuesday victory the Cal Poly Pomona Women’s Basketball team fell short to Chico State away at Humboldt State for the CCAA semi final game.

The Bronco’s firing during the game resulted in a mere 27.6 percent, and the team committed 22 turnovers.

The loss broke the Bronco’s six game winning streak, and ended the run for first place in the conference.

“We have beat Chico State but they are playing the best basketball in the conference right now,” said Coach Davis. “The competition level is going to rise. Now every we play is a NCAA tournament type team. Every possession counts. One turn could mean a win or loss. Each thing contains so much more importance.”

Overall, Cal Poly has a victory record of 22-6 in the season with 18-6 in the conference.

The Women’s Basketball team’s next move depended on the NCAA Tournament announcement of Sunday.

The Broncos were seeded fifth.

“I want to get a chance at San Diego again. They beat us with 20 seconds to go at their place, and that really cost us a share of first place,” said Coach Davis.

The conference championship was ultimately won by Humboldt State.

The Lumberjacks therefore earned an automatic spot in the NCAA bracket.
