Cal Poly sucks, right?

Cal Poly sucks. I mean it does, right? It must, because that’s what I hear from so many of you.

During this introductory week of classes, one of my professors asked us to stand up and say our name, major and what we liked about Cal Poly.

The first few students answered the question as asked, then one guy stood up and responded “my name is [redacted], my major is [redacted] and I don’t like Cal Poly.”
And there it was.

The parasitic comment that swept through the room faster than mono spreads through the dorms. One by one, nearly every next student cited a variation of the “I don’t like Cal Poly” statement.

I think this example is fairly representative of the student body in general.

The second students here realize our school doesn’t compare with UCLA or USC, they jump on the “Cal Poly Sucks” bandwagon like their feet are on fire.

All I can think is, “Then why are you here?”

Seriously, ask yourself that question.

If you had an option to go somewhere else, why didn’t you take it? There obviously must have been some reason you answered Cal Poly’s acceptance letter with an intent to enroll.

I think the problem is that so many see this university as some sort of college experience ATM machine that spits out all of the components they need for that quintessential college life they see in the movies.

And when it doesn’t fit the typical college life you were expecting, you criticize all aspects the first chance you get.

Well guess what: this isn’t Van Wilder and you actually have to work to get something out of your time here.

Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed (OK, a lot) when I first arrived at CPP and wasn’t immediately overwhelmed with a sense of campus community and pride.

As a transfer from a Division I university where the school colors practically coursed through our veins, it was an adjustment to say the least.

But after about the third phone call home complaining about my situation, my mom gave me some very sage advice which I will now pass on to you: “You’re not transferring, Brittany, so you better do something about it.”

That’s it.

Do something about it.

And I did. Three weeks later, I, along with several other impassioned students started an organization called Students for the Acceleration of Campus Culture, or SACC.

Through this organization, we sought to spread campus spirit and pride by connecting those of us who wanted to make the most out of this time in our lives.

And while SACC has since disbanded and we have all gone our separate ways, the uniting characteristic we all shared – that desire to seize these moments, whether or not the rest of you were along for the ride, has allowed each of us to go on to do what I consider remarkable things not just within the confines of this university, but in our lives as well.

Throughout my time here, I’ve actually grown to love Cal Poly. When you open your eyes to its endearing characteristics, it’s not at all difficult to do. I could spend pages touting its most valiant qualities, but the bottom line is that it really is all I could ask for in a university.

Quarter by quarter, I see change stirring. This campus is much more united than it was two years ago when I arrived. From subtle changes to grand ones like last Thursday’s rally for the basketball team, Cal Poly is on the rise.

So please, if you’re unhappy here at Cal Poly, I urge you: do something about it.
But if you choose to remain miserable, wasting away thousands of dollars and years of your life while you unhappily trudge through higher education, stop projecting your negativity on the rest of us.

Your infection is just unsightly.

This is junk. Former ASI member bragging about campus. Surprise, surprise. Look at us now. Poly Post, I urge you, take down this star-Spangler banner for Cal Poly.

While it is true that times are hard for everyone, most other schools are not doing as badly as Cal Poly, even other Cal State schools. Also, I think it is easier for students whose programs have not been cut to criticize the disillusioned students who have lost their majors or grad programs. It might benefit everyone to be a little more sensitive to one another’s feelings in these difficult times. If you have pride in your school, that’s great. But some of us are petitioning, writing letters, sending emails, and protesting just to be able to get through our programs (with little success, I might add). Please respect our right to be frustrated and angry.

To all those of you who had a bad experience here at CPP it is very unfortunate. All I have to say is that I had a wonderful experience as a student! Perhaps those of you who are complaining might be the ones who don't or haven't gotten involved on campus, but if you get involve in campus activities, sports, clubs etc. you will see how your perspective will begin to change. You will be able to see the wonderful things that this campus and staff have to offer. Yes! Staff! I have been so lucky to encounter and meet staff and faculty that care so much about students and their well-being! Don't get me wrong, I did have a few bad professor that drove me insane and seem not to care about students, but we cannot judge our university based on a couple of bad classes and a bad experience. WE HAVE TO LOOK AT THE BIG PICTURE! We are lucky to be here! Do you know how many students were truned away when they applied??? And no, it wasn't because our administration is bad or doesn't care-they are doing what they can with what they have. The budget crisis is affecting every campus in the state of California! All of us have to come together-staff, faculty and students- to get through these difficult times. Instead of pointing fingers and blaming each other for what we don't have, lets rejoice for what we do have, which is an opportunity to be here and learn. You make your college experience what you want it to be!!!! If you want to be sour and resentful towards this University and its people, then I cannot change your mind. All I have to say is BE SMART! LOOK AROUND YOU! THERE ARE MANY WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT THIS UNIVERSITY ! WE ARE THE UNIVERSITY!!! BE PROUD!!! AND IF YOU DON'T LIKE SOMETHING DO SOMETHING TO FIX IT, DON'T JUST COMPLAIN ABOUT IT!!!

There has to be some reason the "I (heart) CPP!" buttons were almost sold out at the bookstore!
I got the last one! Hey, I remember SACC. Don't worry Brit, I bet these are the types that disappear after the 3rd week or the 1st year at CPP. I've been here for, well, 7 years and I wish I never had to leave.

None of my classes from my last school transferred over, my major has been cut, all upper division classes I need to graduate sometime this decade have been canceled, and they keep increasing my fees. But sure, Cal Poly is an awesome school. What was I thinking? It's such a rewarding experience to have to redo all my classes and waste time and money on a school that doesn't give a sh*t about me (sorry for the language). I regret coming here with all of my being, and if it wouldn't waste MORE time and money, I would have transferred out again. I'm sorry if I sound bitter, but it really has been a miserable experience.

Cal Poly does suck! As someone who has lived on campus for four years, I am thankful that my time at this school is winding down. I'm not one of those commuters who goes to school just for class and then goes home without a care in the world. I have invested numerous "volunteer hours" into this school to try to give my department some relevancy and yet I am consistently treated like a piece of dirt by administrators and various facilities that are supposed to help students. What kind of school refuses to offer classes? Or worse yet, has classes available, but does not let students register for them? How about sending threatening emails you when money for classes is not even due, but hesitating to inform students when sexual assaults are taking place on campus? How can you be proud of a school when it goes out of its way to disenfranchise the students it is suppose to empower?

It's nice that you created something to get fired up over, Brit, but after 3 years at CPSLO I have to say that the teachers and quality of education don't measure up to the junior college I transferred from. What an f'ing waste of my time and money. I'm here because it's the only college in my town and I don't have the funds to move. I'm fortunate to have a job that pays just enough to put myself through school and a boss who is lax enough to let me go to school and work in my spare time. Unfortunately, the university faculty don't give a **** about the struggles I go through to attend school and the engineering curriculum is outdated and out of touch with reality. I don't like Cal Poly because Cal Poly doesn't care about me or my success. Cal Poly is full of itself and full of ****.
Still unimpressed!

Cal Poly Pomona does suck! As a student who wad interested in Animal Science but did not have the money to move away from home to go to school, I didn't have a lot of choices...so I got stuck with this place...AND I HATE IT! I would NEVER encourage anyone to come here! The staff cares more about their paycheck and time off than the success of their students. As a commuter school, one would think there would be courses that reflect that, yet classes (in my dept) are NEVER offered in the evenings, so God forbid you must pay your way through school by having a REAL job...you are here FOREVER! I cannot say anything GREAT about this university, except once I am done in the Winter, I never have to come back!

i think those people that says cal poly sucks... isn't really looking around at the bright side of what cal poly has to offer.
the beautiful campus.. the clubs that exist in campus, the different services in campus..
if it really does suck, then as you say BRittany, do something about it. Be involved in campus. Be the change you want to see don't just complain about it and not do anything about it because we can all complain about everything that is wrong about the campus. That wouldn't result in anything though.. it would just result in complaining and nothing else...

Like the famous line Obama said for his campaign... what is it again?? Be THE CHANGEE...

ok nough.. pep talking..
