Cal Poly’s men’s basketball team advanced to the next round of the NCAA Div. II West Regional finals yesterday with a 71-62 win over Dixie State. The Broncos play again today against top-seed host school Western Washington University in the West Region semifinal at 7 p.m.
“We held our composure tonight and got the job done,’’ head coach Greg Kamansky said. “Austin [Swift] played at an elite level tonight, and our experienced guys stepped it up at different times. We passed the ball well and shot above 50 percent.’’
Swift led the Broncos’ offensive efforts with a game-high 18 points, while pulling down six rebounds. Senior guard Dahir Nasser scored 10 points.
Freshman guard Mitchel Anderson had a great performance off the bench with 11 points. The result is his ninth double-digit scoring game out of the last 12.
Once again, a great shooting percentage and a strong defense was the difference for the Broncos. Cal Poly out-shot Dixie State 50.1 percent to 34 percent.
Today's other semifinal will see Brigham Young University Hawaii face Cal Poly’s rival Cal State San Bernardino at 5 p.m. The Broncos will face the winner of that game should they advance.
The game will be broadcast at www.wwuvikings.com.
Women's basketball team falls to Anchorage
The women’s team did not share the men’s success, falling to No. 14 Alaska Anchorage, 69-50. The Broncos end their successful season with a 22-7 record.
In the women’s game, senior Stephisha Walton produced a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Jessica Duran finished her career as a Bronco with a career-high 11 points.
The Broncos’ go-to offensive player, junior Reyana Colson, was held to just 10 points after shooting three of 15 from the floor.
