It is always hard to get back in the grind after a long summer break, whether you are starting your first year of college or a step closer to your degree, so why not have fun all year.
Pomona may not be the typical college town, but it has the potential.
Sorority life, sports, an entertainment center, book store and even frequent on-campus concerts can all be found at Cal Poly.
Tuesdays at University Hour, or U-hour, the student government and the Bronco Events and Activities Team showcase local musicians at the Bronco Student Center and University Park.
U-Rock brings energy to University Park with variety of music like Irish folk/punk, surf rock, rockabilly and indie rock.
If rock is not your scene, catch the Afternoon Blend inside the BSC at Center Court with acoustic rhythms.
By bringing live entertainment to lunch hour, students can embrace the college experience.
“We want students to have fun and enlighten the day,” said Akiko Moritake, BEAT co-chair and fourth-year music student.
This year, Cal Poly welcomed the Living Suns, Dusty Rhodes and the River Band and the Gobshytes at U-Rock, along with marketable band Lady Danville and Mike Pinto during Afternoon Blend.
For the past three years, the BEAT team has organized a concert series in efforts to develop campus culture. The BEAT committee brings variety to the campus.
“There is something for everyone,” Moritake said.
In previous years, U-hour has seen Tyrone Wells, We Shot the Moon and Monte Negro.
Cal Poly has been a stepping stone for many popular bands like Bad Religion and the Living End.
“The Living End played [its] first U.S. show here,” Moritake said.
Cal Poly has also opened the door for young acts like Colby Caillat. Shortly after playing on campus, she became well-known and got a record deal with Universal Republic.
U-hour concerts are a great way to introduce new talent to a diverse group of college students.
The committee brings in bands from every genre. The BEAT committee picks new talent by going to shows and experiencing live entertainment.
U-hour shows are only held once a week because the committee strives for the best bands.
“We pick quality over quantity,” Moritake said.
At the start of every school term, BEAT brings big talent to Bronco Fusion. RX Bandits, De La Soul, Unwritten Law and No Doubt are just a few bands that have rocked the start to a new school year.
