Science Fiction Theater, The Shape of the Earth, Michael Runion and Gold Motel all took the stage last Wednesday night at The Wire in downtown Upland.
“We love playing at The Wire” said Mike Jimenez, lead singer of Science Fiction Theater. “We’re a local band so we play here about every four months.”
The band not only consists of guitarists, bassists and drummers, but also incorporates banjos, harmonicas, ukuleles and bells into their music. Science fiction has an unique mixture of instruments to produce a rock dance blend.
“I like how different their sound is,” said Michael Mattice, an adoring fan. “They incorporate a variety of instruments that give off a dance vibe. It made me want to move the entire time they were on stage.”
The Shape of the Earth sang distinctive harmonies and upbeat melodies. Lead singer Gavin Bascom’s poignant voice added powerful emotions to the lyrics.
“I really enjoyed their performance,” said Nick Camacho, employee of The Wire. “I’m good friends with some of the band members and what they do on stage is beyond incredible.”
Runion’s music encompasses the poetic and melodic sounds of acoustic and bass guitars. Many of his songs are about past experiences and self-reflections.
As he sang, Runion’s emotions were illustrated through his facial expressions, lyrics and vocals. He not only performed intimate pieces but upbeat songs as well.
“I drove all the way up from Newport [Beach] to see him perform,” said Rick Ballreich, a fan of Runion. “I’ve been following his music now for a year and a half and can’t get enough.”
Gold Motel stormed the stage with musical styles, which mirrored the previous performances.
The only female lead singer of the night, Greta Morgan, classifies their music as good classic pop with an indie rock edge.
“Our goal isn’t to make music that people want to listen to,” said Morgan. “It’s to make music that we want people to listen to.”
The relatively new Chicago-based band put together a set, which included songs from their EP and debut tracks from their unreleased album.
Many of the songs performed consisted of upbeat tempos. In addition to their energetic pieces, Gold Motel sang a few slow tempo songs showing the variety and range in their musical style.
Donavan Foy, owner of The Wire, said there was no other place in the area for bands or artists to display their talents prior to The Wire’s opening in August 2006.
