In order to avoid the freshman 15, or just to keep in shape, students at Cal Poly enroll in kinesiology classes to maintain a healthy lifestyle and lean body.

Every quarter, the Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department provides activity classes for students who wish to stay fit, as well as learn a new sporting skill. These classes are one unit each and help to fulfill the electives course section for all students’ General Education.

“The activity program at CPU in the Kinesiology and Health Promotion Department offers a wide variety of classes that students can take for college credit,” said Barbara Harmer-Garcia, a lecturer for the kinesiology department. “The instructors are all committed professionals who enjoy teaching their students movement skills for their lifetime.”

For about 50 minutes two days a week, students can enroll in activity classes such as badminton, archery, karate, kick boxing and social dance.

“I like them, but it really depends on the teacher,” said Kerrie Lazenby, a third-year marketing management student. “They’re really fun and motivating to get you to work out on a consistent basis.

In previous years, classes have been offered in bowling, racquetball, bicycling and cross country skiing.

For students who want to stay fit during the summer, the kinesiology department offers classes in jogging/walking, soccer, beginning swim/water aerobics and beginning weight training. Topics such as nutrition, warm-up activities and health-related issues are also discussed in the classes. The classes are offered June 22 to July 28.

“We strive to provide a variety of activities in order to engage students to move and maybe find an activity they enjoy and will do even after college,” said Harmer-Garcia. “For many students, [they] are a perfect balance for a busy college life. Our classes are quite popular and fill quickly.”
