Cal Poly’s GRV dance group performed in coordinating outfits to hip-hop remixes.

Ursa Major was packed with more than 200 students last Wednesday during the Asian and Pacific Islander’s Student Center’s Urban Showcase at the Bronco Student Center

The show featured hip-hop performances by several groups, including Team Millennia, who was part of season three of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew.

The event opened with Ron Zheng’s Poetography exhibit as well as a “Who Am I” exhibit organized by APISC Coordinator Sharon Rocacorba.

Tables were set up for all the groups, allowing students to interact with the performers and learn more about their programs.

Vice President of Student Affairs Doug Freer welcomed the audience,  and Team Millennia Juniors kicked off the evening performances.

GRV, a campus hip-hop dance group, performed in matching red t-shirts baring a hand morphing into a gun.

Between performances, Rocacorba, along with Co-Coordinator Jackie Walker and APISC Office Manager Khoa Nguyen, read off raffle ticket numbers. Tickets were sold for $1 and proceeds benefited the center.

Prizes from the raffle included gift cards to the book store, Cal Poly Pomona gear, a photo collection from Ron Zheng, posters signed by the event’s performers and an iPod dock.

Along with the dance performances, Cathy Nguyen, Randolph Permejo and Andrew Garcia serenaded the crowd with solo and duet singing performances.

Nguyen is known for her videos on YouTube that show off her impressive vocals. Garcia and Permejo also entertained the crowd with their smooth voices and skillful strumming on acoustic guitar.

They covered songs by John Legend, Adele, Maroon 5 and Ne-Yo.

Team Millennia showed the crowd why the deserved to be part of MTV’s national dance competition by showing off their precise and entertaining hip-hop moves.

Far East Movement, a hip-hop group consisting of four rappers, got the crowd on its feet with an energetic ending performance.

The group’s music has been featured on HBO’s Entourage, “Fast & Furious Tokyo Drift” and the CBS hit “CSI: Miami.”

The event was part of month-long festivities in celebration of Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.

Many other events are slated to be held during this month, including a discussion on “Islam 101.”
