The time has come for me to bid farewell to the weekly dining endeavors this column has taken me to. Through all the crunchy, fried, bland and spicy foods I have tasted this quarter and last, I have learned more about my palette than ever before. Each place I have visited gave me a better perspective on cuisines offered locally around Pomona including Walnut, Diamond Bar and Claremont. 1 comment

One week of cleaning dirty mouths

In an effort to curb foul language and promote civil discourse, a resolution was passed by the California State Assembly to make the first week in March Cuss-Free Week. Many Cal Poly students agree with the resolution and the need to watch the use of four-letter words.

Students reject Hulu subscription proposal

Students at Cal Poly say they will not pay the price when such popular free Internet video services like Hulu begin forcing users to pay subscription fees. In an attempt to garner a new, previously untapped source of revenue, the owners of Hulu are in talks to change from their free video service to a subscription service, similar to that found with the video renting company Netflix.

Spring Break on the horizon

Constant status updates on Facebook reveal students cannot stop talking about spring break. The usual hot spot for spring break is Mexico, but this year students are flocking to the desert, or the beach or are simply heading home to relax. “[I’ll be] resting to be ready for spring,” said Don Huinh, a third-year civil engineer student.

Pop quiz: What is possibly the only film in movie history to include a smoking caterpillar on its list of reasons for being rated PG? The answer is Tim Burton’s latest film, “Alice in Wonderland.” The film centers on Alice, played by fresh face Mia Wasikowska.

Beyond the looking glass: Fictional story tells dark tale of Alice’s secret life

Melanie Benjamin got the idea for her book “Alice I Have Been” after seeing several photographs of young girls by Charles Dodgson, who used the pen name Lewis Carroll. One photo caught Benjamin’s attention. It was of a girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the Dean of Christ Church, who inspired Dodgson’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” fictional tale.

‘Madd Hatter Party’ had fans going crazy

The hype emanating from Tim Burton’s latest cinematic spin on a classic tale has everyone riding the Wonderland wagon. Of course where there’s a theme, there are theme parties. In true Hollywood fashion, the ultra-chic Boulevard 3 club on Sunset hosted a Madd Hatter Party, this weekend.

Quantic Dream storms the interactive drama

With the new PlayStation 3 title, “Heavy Rain,” developers Quantic Dream continue their philosophy that video games can be a medium capable of delivering thought provoking stories on par with those found in movie theaters. Like Quantic Dream’s previous title, “Indigo Prophecy,” “Heavy Rain” is essentially a game without gameplay.

Science Fiction Theater, The Shape of the Earth, Michael Runion and Gold Motel all took the stage last Wednesday night at The Wire in downtown Upland. “We love playing at The Wire” said Mike Jimenez, lead singer of Science Fiction Theater.

Switchfoot, Christian music’s most famous crossover band, visited The House of Blues in Downtown Disney to promote their seventh studio record “Hello Hurricane” last Friday to 1,500 excited fans. “The new album is artistically different, but I love that they could change and still please their long-term fans,” and Kara Vallard, a business student from Riverside College.

The beer kept flowin’ and the indie-rock kept boppin’ despite the low crowd at the first annual Hollywood Brewfest on Saturday at the Henry Fonda Theatre. “There are small groups everywhere,” said Brenda Simmons, a Los Angeles resident.
