In a mass email this morning, University President Michael Ortiz announced to the Cal Poly campus that he has withdrawn his candidacy for the presidency at New Mexico State University.
This announcement comes one day before a decision was to be made by the NMSU Board of Regents as to who will lead their campus.
President Ortiz stated in the email that, “The outpouring of support we have received over the past couple of weeks has been unbelievably moving. We are privileged to be part of this great community.
“In the end, there is so much more we need to accomplish. We are facing the most difficult challenges in our history. To face these we have to come together as a community. Our students are relying on us. This is our fight, and we can’t just walk away.”
Richard Liu, ASI president, said that Ortiz staying is definitely a good thing.
“We [the campus] won’t have to do another presidential search,” Liu said.
He went on to say that even though the campus’ problems may get worse, Ortiz wanting to stay and help will be much more positive than if he had left for New Mexico.
Three candidates remain in NMSU’s search: Barbara Couture, senior vice chancellor for academic affairs and professor of English at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, James Oblinger, chancellor of North Carolina State University and Lisa Rossbacher, president of Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga.
Candidate Richard Herman, Chancellor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, withdrew his name Nov. 11.
Calls to NMSU were not immediately returned.
