The music department hosted the Spring Showcase Music Hour II Thursday, where a number of music students performed.
The showcase, which was held in the recital hall during U-hour, was the second show of its kind this quarter.
"We've had this event twice this quarter because we've had so many students that feel ready to perform," said Nadia Shpachenko, the showcase director and a music professor. "We always have a nice turnout, so it's a good opportunity for them to practice their performance skills and play for their friends."
The audience was treated to the sound of seven musical acts, consisting mostly of pianists. One female student seemed to fare better than the rest, as evident when the crowd cheered for her.
"[Ryann Clover] who sang was really good. She sang a really good song to show off her voice," said Justin Smart, a second-year kinesiology student. "She even moved around and kind of acted out her lyrics."
Along with Clover's crowd-pleasing performance, the recital hall echoed musical pieces derived from the famous musical composers Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
While the showcase favored pianists, acts such as Philip De La O and Joseph Canal played instruments from the string family. De La O and Canal started off the showcase playing the guitar to the tune of Bach's "Sinfonia from Canata No. 29."
Throughout De La O and Canal's performance the hall was half-full, but before the second performance the hall filled with students. Some first- and second-year students came to the showcase looking to gain extra credit for their classes.
"I came because I get extra credit for my Music 101 class. I just need to attend, like, three more of these to get full credit," said Christina Wiley, a first-year hotel and restaurant management student. "I see a lot of kids from my classes here."
To end the showcase, student Michael Jung played "Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor." This musical piece, from well-known Russian composer Sergei Rachmaniunoff, lasted almost 10 minutes. When Chung stood to bow to the crowd, he was visibly tired from the performance.
"The last performance was a good ending to the show," said Devin James, a first- year mechanical engineering student.
