An energized crowd of about 60 waited shared an evening with performer, songwriter and activist Nellie McKay last Thursday at the recital hall. After two introductions, McKay made her way on stage making sure not to show the back of her hair, which served as the basis for several jokes during her show. After performing her first song and forgetting a few words, she commented about how students should be sure to remember their songs during performances. McKay's unique sound has been described as having a quirky style, razor sharp wit and a machine gun delivery that has put her into her own class. Her lyrics touch on anything from a pouncing cat to President-Elect Barack Obama to recent political trends discussed in the media. She has a playful tone with bold lyrics that make an everlasting impression on her listeners. "I thought the show was great. So far, it's very different and it's cool to have something different on campus. Itís really left field, not really the norm. She definitely has her qualities that separate her from anyone else," said Jorge Rengel, a third-year musical student. McKay's music has been featured in films such as "Rumor Has It."
